Experiential Learning in Civil and Environmental Engineering

As a student in the Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Tech, you’ll gain not only a strong foundation in engineering principles but also hands-on, real-world experience that prepares you for the challenges of the profession. From fieldwork and research to internships and service-learning, you’ll apply your knowledge to real infrastructure, environmental systems, and communities. The world is our classroom, and every student has the opportunity to engage with it—bridging the gap between academics and practice.

We strive to provide transformative experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications, including:

  • Field and Laboratory Experience – Hands-on exposure engineering through lab work, design-build projects, and site visits.
  • Undergraduate Research – Opportunities to engage in cutting-edge research
  • Internships and Co-ops – Industry partnerships that allow students to gain practical experience with engineering firms, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Study Abroad and Global Projects – Applying engineering solutions to global challenges through international research programs and study abroad programs.
  • Design Competitions and Collaborative Learning – Student organizations such as the Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge teams work on real-world engineering problems, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills.

Through these experiences, students develop technical expertise, leadership skills, and a global perspective—preparing them to shape the built and natural environment.
