Bryan J. Katz recognized as Fellow of ASCE
Bryan J. Katz has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). This honor recognizes outstanding professional distinction and reflects exceptional contributions to the civil engineering field. Katz, a Professor of Practice in the Transportation Infrastructure and Systems Engineering program is recognized for his leadership in traffic engineering, transportation safety, and operations, as well as his dedication to student learning and professional development.
Advancing Transportation Safety and Operations
Katz’s work focuses on improving transportation systems through research and practice in traffic engineering, traffic control devices, and human factors. His efforts aim to enhance roadway safety and efficiency by better understanding how drivers interact with infrastructure and how traffic systems can be optimized.
With extensive experience in both academia and industry, Katz has contributed to numerous projects in transportation safety and operations, helping bridge the gap between research and real-world application.
Dedicated Educator and Mentor
A three-time alumnus of Virginia Tech, Katz is deeply committed to undergraduate education. He teaches courses such as Introduction to Civil and Environmental Engineering, Introduction to Transportation Engineering, Transportation Safety, and Geometric Design of Highways, helping students build a strong foundation for their careers.
Known for his engaging teaching style and mentorship, Katz has received multiple teaching honors. At Virginia Tech, he has received the G.V. Loganathan Faculty Achievement Award, the Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Teaching Excellence Award, and a Certificate of Teaching Excellence through the College of Engineering. Externally, he has received the Wilbur Smith Distinguished Transportation Award from the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), the Excellence in Transportation Education Award through the Southern District of ITE, and the Eugene Arnold Outstanding Individual Activity Award from the Virginia Section of ITE.
Industry Leader and Lasting Impact
In addition to his academic role, Katz brings more than two decades of professional experience as a practicing transportation engineer. He has led and contributed to numerous transportation projects, particularly in traffic control and safety, and continues to shape best practices in the field.
In addition to his contributions in the field, Dr. Katz has also been admitted to the grade of Fellow with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Education Council for ITE and the Vice President of the Virginia Section of ITE.
